Referral Procedure

We respond to emergency referrals and ensure a timely response based on the information provided.

Referrals will be promptly assessed by the ward consultant psychiatrist and a senior nurse. In the majority of cases the decision regarding admission is made by assessing the information provided within the referral form in the Further Information panel on the right-hand side.

Sometimes further clarifications may be sought over the telephone and very occasionally it is decided to formally assess certain patients prior to making a decision about admission.

An Independent View

During 2007 a team of researchers from the Health Services Management Centre at the University of Birmingham conducted an in-depth independent review of the hospital.

As part of the review, team members visited the hospital and developed a perspective on the services provided and the way in which staff members work together.

The reviewers were impressed with the atmosphere that pervades the hospital; in particular they noted the relaxed ward environment and the strong sense of calm and safety with security notably unobtrusive. Intuitively, therefore, one might expect the quality of care and formal governance issues to be of a high standard, and this was borne out by the interviews the team from the university undertook and the reports of Healthcare Commission in 2004, 2005, and 2007.

Members of the review team also interviewed several commissioning organisations, some of whom have experience of commissioning services from the hospital. Those who mentioned the The Huntercombe Hospital - Roehampton were all pleased with the quality of services, commenting on good communications with local clinicians and commissioners, high standards of clinical care and one specifically commented that the service has done well with some very difficult patients.

Our Facilities

As the comfort and recovery of our patients is our number one priority, all the wards are specially designed to give excellent observation and opportunities for engagment with our staff. As such, they are spacious and airy, with an abundance of natural daylight. Individually styled bedrooms and access to a superbly equipped gymnasium, outdoor sports court and landscaped gardens mean that patients experience of staying at the hospital is greatly enhanced.

Our Specialties

  • Complex needs and challenging behaviour
  • Treatment resistant schizophrenia
  • Borderline personality disorder
  • Dual diagnosed mental health conditions and substance misuse
  • Civil and forensic section patients
  • Neuropsychiatry and acquired brain injury (including forensic)

We treat patients who are particularly challenging to traditional community and inpatient teams.

We offer a range of high quality therapies and activities, both in-house and in the community, to support patients in their progress through treatment and rehabilitation.

Ongoing Support

We recognise the complex needs of our client group and, therefore, ensure that post-discharge we follow up each patient via the Care Programme Approach process with the referring body.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment Programme

Our specialist clinical teams are committed to providing dual diagnosis treatment to severe and persistently mentally ill patients who are referred for both mental health and substance abuse difficulties.

We achieve excellent results by adapting assertive community treatment (New Hampshire Model), dialectical behaviour therapy, cognitive behavioural treatment, integrated matrix treatment, dual diagnosis psychoeducation groups, and therapeutic community models, for use with this challenging group of patients.

Our specialist practitioners from nursing, occupational therapy, social work, psychology and psychiatry have recieved state of the art training in each of these dual diagnosis treatment protocols and integrate either parallel or sequential interventions customised to meet the needs of each individual patient. This training remains ongoing and skills are continually upgraded through CPD in dual diagnosis treatment technologies. This has the net effect to optimise the potential for a rapid response to treatment and increase the likelihood that their progress will be continued post discharge to remain clean and sober, as they continue to recover from mental illness.

Clinical Governance Framework

The clinical and non-clinical agendas are progressed through a robust Governance Framework driven by research and audit. We also offer excellent staff development opportunities, including implementation of a DBT programme. Our weekly Academic programme supports learning and development of all our staff.

We have also a dedicated, specialist pharmacist who provides all our pharmacy requirements including psycho-education for patients and medication related audits. He also sits on the monthly Pharmacy Advisory Committee.

Weekly patient progress reports are sent to referrers. Discharge planning is carried out through active liaison with the referring team through the CPA process.
