The Huntercombe Hospital - Edinburgh

The Huntercombe Hospital - Edinburgh

This centre is dedicated to the provision of high quality treatment services for young people aged 11 and older, up to 30 years of age, who are experiencing psychiatric, psychological and emotional problems. Building on many years experience, we are recognised as leaders in care for adolescents with eating disorders.

Our experienced team of Doctors, Nurses, Therapists, Teachers and Social Workers offers each young person a holistic treatment programme tailored to their individual needs.

To help referrers deal more effectively with eating disorder patients in crisis, we offer a rapid response service wherever possible. Close liaison with the referrer is important to us, as part of the emphasis we place on continuity of care at all stages.

Religious, cultural and ethnic requirements are addressed, as are our obligations under the Children's Act and the Mental Health Act.

Referral Procedure

We welcome referrals from the young person's NHS Consultant Psychiatrist. Working in partnership with the local team right from the point of assessment ensures effective discharge planning and implementation of appropriate longer-term treatment.

Please see the Referral Form in the Further Information panel on the right-hand side.

Treatment

Central to our assessment and treatment of eating disorders is the involvement of the family. In addition to therapeutic care, we provide help and support for the people most affected by these distressing and potentially life threatening disorders.

Our dedicated Eating Disorders Service offers a comprehensive and flexible approach to treatment for individuals aged 11 and onwards, up to 30 years old and above.

Patients are generally accepted for treatment of severe eating disorders, such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa or similar eating disorders. Our comprehensive Outpatient, Day and Inpatient treatment programmes are tailored to meet the individual needs of the young people and their families, and involve a combination of family therapy, individual psychotherapy, dietetic advice and education, physiotherapy and group therapies.

To ensure we stay at the forefront of best practice and developments in this field, we regularly carry out audits and follow-up studies to evaluate the treatment programmes, and modify them as necessary, in line with our aim to provide high quality cost effective care.

Assessment and Consultation

Detailed initial assessment by our multi-disciplinary team, in consultation with the referrer, enables treatment options to be considered in an informed manner. We provide advice on meeting the young persons individual immediate and longer term needs as well as providing consultation and support to referrers where appropriate.

Outpatient Treatment

For some patients and families, our outpatient treatment programme may be the most effective way to address specific individual or family requirements.

Day Programme

Patients for whom outpatient treatment is sufficient, or those about to enter or be discharged from inpatient care, may be treated in our comprehensive day programme which, in most respects, is similar to our inpatient therapy. Our Day Programme is an effective transition for patients moving forward from inpatient treatment, ensuring consistency of therapies and structure, but at the same time allowing the young person to spend increasing periods of time at home.

Inpatient Care

Patients requiring highly structured and more intensive treatment can be admitted for residential care. Our inpatient unit staffed 24 hours a day by highly qualified Nurses specialising in the treatment of eating disorders. The unit is comfortable, private and self-contained with its own separate therapy and living areas. School and leisure activities form an integral part of our treatment.

Aftercare and Follow-Up

Whether the patient is receiving Outpatient, Inpatient or Day care, we place a major emphasis on follow-up, to give the patient the best prospects for long term recovery. In this way, patients and their families are provided with continued support whilst progress is sustained and any ongoing difficulties are worked through.
