Central Scotland Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre

Central Scotland Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre

The Centre

Our Centre provides a comprehensive assessment and rehabilitation programme for adults who have an acquired brain injury.  Their problems may be physical, psychosocial, cognitive and/or behavioural, although we do not deal with severe challenging behaviour.  We also provide a programme for people who are minimally conscious.

The Centre provides comfortable accommodation with excellent therapeutic and recreational facilities.

We are located near the village of Bonkle, only 20 minutes from Glasgow city centre and 10 minutes from the main Glasgow/Edinburgh M8 motorway. Find us just over 1 mile from Newmains roundabout, by taking the road to Bonkle.

Assessment

Most patients undergo a 2 week assessment, during which the neuropsychologist, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists and nurses use standardised tests and measures to determine the level of their problems.  People who are minimally conscious have a 4 week assessment.  The team meets with the patient, their family and any other professionals involved in their care.  Their problems are discussed and goals are set and agreed with the patient.  These goals determine the nature of the rehabilitation.

Rehabilitation

The majority of patients commence their rehabilitation immediately following their assessment.  The programme consists of individual and group sessions.  Physiotherapy addresses movement, balance and co-ordination problems, as well as promoting fitness in the fitness centre.  The hydrotherapy pool adds extra value to this therapy.  The occupational therapists target daily living skills, time occupation and recreation, vocational skills and community access.  Speech and language therapy addresses comprehension, speech and social communication.

Neuropsychology deals with memory, mood, executive function, anger and anxiety.  Nurses deal with nutrition, continence, personal care and tissue viability.

Goals are reviewed at the end of 8 weeks.  Depending on the result, new goals may be set for a further 8 weeks or goals set for discharge.

Referral Procedure

Most referrals are via the relevant health boards, who fund the assessment/rehabilitation programmes.  A contact list should be on the further information panel on the right hand side.

Facilities

Accommodation is provided in single rooms.  There are 2 large lounges, one of which contains a pool table.  Patients are enabled to prepare beverages, snacks or meals, depending on their levels of function, in our training kitchen.  The transitional living flat helps bridge the gap between dependency and independent living.  The hydrotherapy pool is used for therapeutic and recreational activities.

There are weekly outings to the local supermarket, sports centre, library and garden centre in our own minibus.

Inspection Reports

All our units are subject to inspection by Government agencies. You can read this unit's inspection report on the Government website. Please click here.

Work begins on £1.2m Development!

Kay Forbes (Central Scotland BIRC Lead Therapist) and Catherine Symington (Huntercombe Regional Manager) make a start on the work

Due for completion in May 2010, the plans incorporate new facilities that will both double the overall size of our centre and enhance the throughput of clients from active rehabilitation by providing lower intensity continuing care services on the same site before discharge to the community.

To achieve these aims, extensive refurbishment to the existing premises and the complete renovation of the Frank Jamieson Unit, already situated within the Murdostoun Castle grounds, will be undertaken.

On completion of our redevelopment, our facilities will include:

  • 41 bedrooms, many of which will be en-suite
  • Four independent living flats incorporating a bedroom, bathroom, living room and kitchen area
  • Hydrotherapy pool
  • Gymnasium and fitness area
  • Spacious lounge areas with a pool table
  • Activity and table tennis area
  • State of the art Kitchen which provides meals to all clients
  • ADL (Activity of Daily Living) Kitchen
  • Computer area
  • Relative's room
  • Training room
  • Large outdoor garden space

As with our existing business, all clients will have access to our experienced therapy team, with the team being expanded to meet the requirements of the new facility.

Please contact Ann Hunter, Centre Manager, if you would like to discuss this, or any other aspects of our services.
