Learning Disabilities
We look after the short term and continuing educational, healthcare and therapeutic needs of people with moderate to severe learning disabilities.
A learning disability is a neurological disorder that affects the brain's ability to receive, process, store and respond to information. The term is used when a person of at least average intelligence has difficulty in acquiring basic academic skills, and their listening, speaking, reading, writing and mathematics abilities are impaired. He/she may also experience difficulties with social and emotional skills. Effects range from mild to severe and people may have more than one learning disability.
Services
At Huntercombe, we believe that a learning disability shouldn't stop a person from achieving aims and gaining independence. Our integrated services cover:

Our approach is positive and goal oriented; therapeutic and educational programmes are designed to help overcome the challenges.
Our centres provide assessment and therapy for young people and adults whose behaviour challenges other services and environments. Because learning difficulties affect each person differently, the development of an individualised care plan is central. For children, our programme fits into their overall multi-agency plan.
We focus on small-group therapy, in a secure, comfortable setting. Each age group benefits from appropriate activities and facilities, including classrooms, gardens, play, leisure and recreational areas. We liaise closely with local special needs schools.
Our Team
Our staff have considerable experience of caring for young people and adults with special needs. Each care team is made up of specialists in several disciplines: RNLD nurse, Occupational Therapist, Psychologist, Special Needs Teacher and residential care staff.
Locations
These centres offer both continuing and short term care for residents and have experience of dealing with a variety of learning disabilities.
