Manager of Linlathen Neurodisability Centre beats off Nationwide Competition to take Prestigious Award

The manager of Linlathen Neurodisability Centre, based just outside Dundee, has received top honours at a prestigious national awards ceremony designed to recognize excellence in the care sector.  James Barnett, Centre Manager at the Huntercombe specialist unit, beat off strong competition from around the UK to be recognized as the winner of the Special Needs Manager category at the 2009 National Care Awards.

The National Care Awards are held every year to recognize excellence in the care sector and reward the work carried out by staff to improve the quality of life of those they look after.  The Special Needs Manager category won by James is designed specifically to highlight the close work of specialist staff to help those with specific injury or illness.

James was given the award thanks to his work managing the Linlathen Neurodisability Centre, which is based on the outskirts of Dundee near Broughty Ferry.  The centre specialises in meeting the needs of adults with complex neurological conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson's Disease and acquired brain injuries and also has a recently launched unit for people with Huntington's Disease.

Under James' guidance the unit has become renowned for championing a person-centric approach aimed at helping patients achieve optimum independence and therefore the best quality of life.  He has managed and motivated the nursing and support team, as well as developing close working relationships with the Local Authorities, Health Boards, the Community Mental Health Team and The Huntington's Association.

James Barnett, Centre Manager at the Linlathen Neurodisability Centre, said, "It is a verification of everything we have achieved to receive this prestigious award.  At the heart of everything we do is a desire to treat our patients as individual human beings, as we feel this provides the best possible quality of care.   Hopefully this award recognizes that just over a year after opening our specialised unit, we are making in-roads towards achieving this goal.

"The award might have my name on it, but it is a testament to everything the team has achieved and all the hard work we have put in."

The 2009 National Care Awards are now in their eleventh year and were held at a glitzy ceremony at London's Hilton Metropole Hotel.
